Biodiversity Offsetting: Ethical Views within Environmental Organisations in the European Union

Biodiversity offsetting is a nature conservation instrument that increasingly used but also strongly criticised. Previous studies have identified the ethical underpinnings of this criticism, if and how ethically-based objections exist among persons active in nongovernmental environmental organisations not clear. This study, therefore, explores occurring views through seven in-depth interviews within group stakeholders. Among results, respondents general took consequential view, according to which both benefits costs with biodiversity should be considered balanced, resting on strong biocentric or ecocentric base, albeit an frame restrictions for when use instrument, indicating deontological basis. Overall, did consider existence intrinsic values, they recognised, nor potential commodification such constituted definite barriers offsetting.
